Berytech, through THE NEXT SOCIETY Advocacy Panel, has been leading on setting a national innovation strategy for Lebanon since 2017, as part of THE NEXT SOCIETY action plan initiated by ANIMA Investment Network and implemented in Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine and Tunisia with the financial support of the European Union.

Experts hired by Berytech have written a report which proposes a roadmap of 29 actionable recommendations for universities and other key ecosystem players to boost the technology transfer dynamics in Lebanon. They defined a financing mechanism and a reward system for applied research adapted to the Lebanese academic context in order to incentivize researchers to develop projects with a commercialization potential, tailored to the needs of at least 5 universities in Lebanon: Lebanese American University, Saint Joseph University, American University of Beirut, Holy Spirit University of Kaslik, and the University of Balamand. …


While taking into account the advantages and disadvantages of the existing innovation indicators, FEMISE has created for THE NEXT SOCIETY, a Scoreboard of innovation that takes into account some of the particularities of the region while shedding light on the progress (or lack) achieved so far.

The 78 selected indicators provide therefore accurate information on the level of performance of the Mediterranean countries regarding the regional context. Built on this scoreboard’s basis, a digital and interactive tool has been developed by ANIMA to make the data simpler to read, THE NEXT SOCIETY i-data.

Innovation plays a crucial role in economic and social development. It is an important driver of growth, productivity, competitiveness, and job creation. It can also help to address some of the socio-economic challenges like health and poverty. As innovation is a collective performance in a large number of aspects and variables, measuring it cannot be done with one variable or indicator, but a collection of indicators, which are called a Scoreboard. THE NEXT SOCIETY, in its ambition to mobilise, promote and reinforce innovation ecosystems and economic development in the MENA countries has developed the first Innovation Scoreboard adapted to the region’s specificities thanks to the work of FEMISE, the leading partner in economic research. …


For the 3rd consecutive year, the ANIMA network was partner of the Startup AFRICA SUMMIT, organised by StartUp Morocco, a flagship event of the international programmes DiafrikInvest and THE NEXT SOCIETY, co-financed by the European Union.


Following the success of the 1st edition organised in Casablanca, the Agency for the Promotion of Industry and Innovation (APII) and the Confederation of Tunisian Citizen Enterprises (CONECT) organised, in partnership with ANIMA Investment Network and France Clusters, the second edition of #TechDays, that took place in Tunis, at the Laico Hotel (Tunis), on January 29. This event has been organised as part of THE NEXT SOCIETY initiative, co-funded by the European Union.

The objective of the #TechDays is to encourage collaboration between the Mediterranean and European innovation actors : clusters, researchers, SMEs, industry experts and policy makers, through sectoral bilateral meetings who enabled them to exchange on their international strategies and portfolios of activities in order to establish roadmaps for future collaborations. …


The third Benchmarking Visit & Training organised by THE NEXT SOCIETY took place in Wallonia, Belgium, from October 28 to November 1, 2019. After Catalonia (Spain) and Piedmont (Italy), this Walloon Benchmarking Visit and Training gathered a delegation of 13 cluster managers and representatives from Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Palestine and Tunisia to take part to this third inspiring edition.
